Ruben Avelar
Senior Director of Career Center Services; Intermediate ESL Class Instructor
About Me
Ruben was born and raised in East Palo Alto and remains a key contributor in his community. He worked as a Youth Advocate for the Youth Development Center in East Palo Alto for 7 years before joining OICW/JobTrain where he has contributed to its mission for close to 30 years.
As JobTrain’s Senior Director of Career Center Services, Ruben manages 6 centers throughout the peninsula that provide specialized resources and employment services to its communities. He maintains JobTrain’s training programs on WIOA’s (Workforce Investment Opportunity Act) Eligible Training Provider List including other contracts with EDD (Employment Development Department-Employment Training Panel Contract), State of California CalCRG, and the Bureau of Private Post Secondary Education. Ruben also manages JobTrain’s English as a Second Language and Spanish Literacy evening classes where he has taught as an ESL Intermediate instructor for twenty six years. Ruben holds a BA in Political Science/Public Policy from UC Berkeley.
