Skills to be attained: This course provides an introduction to basic medical office procedures, administrative medical assisting, financial management, medical practice and health management; an overview of the health industry and the role of the assistant including law and ethics. Telephone, scheduling, reception and processing techniques. Written communication and mail processing. Fees, billing and collection. Diagnostic and procedural coding. Length of Training: 3 modules, 20 weeks (600 hours):
Module 1: 120 hours - 4 weeks Behavior and Communication Skills Module 2: 300 hours - 10 weeks Anatomy and Physiology Module 3: 180 hours - 6 weeks Insurance, Billing and Front Office
Days/Time: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Students must maintain a 90% attendance level.

Entry Requirements: JobTrain Orientation and WONDERLIC assessment. High school graduate or equivalent. One (1) year of relevant work experience as an office or administrative assistant preferred. Must have basic math skills and show evidence of good health and verbal skills. Must be free from conviction by any court (other than minor traffic convictions) or have clearance from the California Department of Health Services.
V.A. Hospital Internship: Participation in this internship will be based on student performance in training. Internship is unpaid; 5-weeks in length; 8 hours per day/40 hours a week for a total of 1,600 hours. Students will be given the opportunity to identify their specific focus: Administrative or Clinical Specialty.
Certification Track: State: California Medical Assistants Association (CCMA); National American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA CMA) (optional: certification is not required for employment as a Medical Office Assistant in the State of California)
