Professional Health Care Worker

Job Description:  This is the only entry-level position in nursing care. Most CNAs work in hospitals, nursing homes or residential care facilities. They provide basic care for patients who are acutely ill, convalescent or elderly. CNAs check and record patient temperature, blood pressure, weight, pulse and respiration. They report changes in patient condition to the professional nursing staff. They assist patients in eating, bathing and dressing. CNAs help patients walk or take them in wheelchairs to treatment, examinations, activities and social programs. Other duties may include directing visitors, answering the phone or cleaning equipment.

Career Opportunities:
Certified Nurse Assistant, Reproductive Health Specialist and other related occupations. Employment in skilled nursing, extended care facilities, and home health care agencies and registries. CNA's are employed in acute hospital settings, though further training is required by most.

Length of Training:
20 weeks, including 5 weeks of theory, 7 weeks of clinical experience, state review and exam.

Days/Time:
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. (5 weeks of theory)
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (7 weeks of clinical)
(Some Saturdays during clinical portion)
Students must complete 100% of training hours in order to qualify for State exam.

Entry Requirements:
JobTrain Orientation and WONDERLIC assessment. Must have basic math skills and show evidence of good health. Must be free from conviction by any court (other than minor traffic convictions) or have clearance from the California Department of Health Services. Must be able to exert 20 - 50 lbs. of force occasionally, 10 - 25 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

Must pass a physical and a PPD/or chest x-ray/immunizations

Skills to be attained:
Communication – Must maintain objectivity in the workplace, interpersonal conflict resolution, observation, reporting and charting skills demonstrating clear oral and written communication. Knowledge of nursing assistant, ethics and professionalism. Individualized training support to emphasize skills.

Patient Care:
Working knowledge of patient rights, infection control, weights and measures, basic patient care and procedures, vital signs, nutrition, long-term care, rehabilitation nursing and understanding and management of death and dying.

Emergency:
Prevention and management of catastrophes, emergencies and unusual occurrences. Safety procedures and body mechanics, emergency codes, symptoms of patient distress, and immediate and temporary interventions.

State Exam for Certification:
Knowledge, skills and terminology to prepare for taking the state examination at course completion.
